Introductory Session
|
There will be an introductory session on Friday evening entitled ‘The OU’s Science Curriculum: an update and discussion’ led by Pat Murphy, the OU's Science Programme Director/Associate Dean (Curriculum
& Awards).
Pat says: "The Science curriculum was already undergoing significant change before the OU was hit first by the funding changes associated with ELQ and
then by the recession. This is an opportunity for an update on the latest situation and also to have your say on proposed changes".

Guest Lecture
|
On the Saturday evening, after the last revision session of the day, we invite you to have a break from revision
mode and catch up on some cutting-edge science for a change! Dr Mark Haw of Strathclyde University will give
a talk entitled 'Life in the Middle':
Mark says: "How does a handful of inanimate atoms and molecules become a living thing? This is the puzzle that still divides physics
and chemistry from biology. Two 19th century events, one an experiment, one a wild flight of fantasy, were the first
steps in the quest for an answer to the puzzle of life. I will try to convince you that we are quite close to the end of
the quest: and that when we do find the answer, we will find it in 'the middle'. The secret of life will be not some
bizarre mathematical entity of quantum field theory, nor something springing miraculously from the physics of bulk
matter - but a product of the world inbetween, the world where physics, chemistry and biology finally join up..."
Individual OUCS or FUSION members will be able to attend these events if they wish, even if they are not attending
the Revision Weekend itself.

Please Note:
|
* We will NOT be increasing the fees this year – Yarnfield have increased theirs but we have decided to absorb the increase.
* We WILL however be tightening up on late registrations and payments. All payments MUST be received IN FULL by 4th
September, and we will NOT be accepting payment on arrival. We are sorry if this makes things a bit less flexible
than in the past, but we have contractual commitments to Yarnfield which might see us out of pocket if the money does not
arrive in time!
* Each person attending the Science Revision Weekend does so on the understanding that he/she attends at
his/her own risk. The organisers have Public Liability insurance for the
meeting but Personal Liability and Personal Accident cover remain the responsibility of the participant.
Delegates should take out appropriate travel insurance if necessary.
* Every effort will be made to provide tutorial provision for the courses listed. However, inclusion of any course is subject to sufficient student
numbers and to the availability of a tutor or tutors. The organisers cannot accept responsibility for the non-arrival of a tutor for any reason and
students should take out any insurance cover they feel necessary to compensate in the event of such an occurrence.
*We may cancel revision sessions for a particular course if a sufficient number of students have not registered for
them, or if a suitable tutor cannot be found. If we do this, we will refund your deposit.

Who We Are
|
The Science Revision Weekend is organised on an entirely voluntary basis by a small group of current and former
OU students. It is supported by OUCS, the OU Chemistry Society, and Fusion, the OU Physics & Astronomy Society.
For most of its 18-year existence the SRW has had no subsidies whatsoever (although we received a small grant
from the OU Physics & Astronomy Department last year, amounting to just over £1 per participant). More information
on the historical background is available on our history page.

Facebook
|
We now have a Facebook Group, which you may find useful for communicating with other students, arranging lifts
etc. To access it, just
click here. If you do not already have
a Facebook log-in, you will be invited to sign up first. It is fairly easy to do this and you should find it a useful
facility. (We did try to set up a FirstClass forum, but apparently it required a large number of people to request
it, and we gave up at that point).
