Following 2007's successful event, the 2008 Science Revision Weekend
will again be held at the Yarnfield Park Training and Conference Centre,
Stone, Staffordshire.
The Science Revision Weekend will cover Open University chemistry, physics, biology and geoscience 'S' courses,
subject to sufficient student numbers.

Course Programme
|
The programme will comprise a combination of seminars, tutorials, workshops and problem-solving sessions
for the following courses (all subject to numbers and availability of tutors).
Level 2: S204, S205, S207, S216, S279, S282, S283
Level 3: S320, SD329, S330, S339, S342, S344, SMT359, S366, S377, S381.
We would like to appeal for students to suggest additional courses to run other than those listed above,
and to recommend suitable tutors.

Accommodation
|
There are 4 accommodation blocks, all non-smoking. All bedrooms are ensuite,
have a double bed and TV, and can be let on either a single or double occupancy basis.
|
Welcome Session and Guest Lecture
|
There will be a Welcome session on Friday evening at which senior members of the OU Chemistry and Physics
Departments will welcome delegates and provide updates on new courses etc. On Saturday evening there will be a
guest lecture by Dr John Wright:
"Cadmium, Lead and Mercury - Lessons from the past?"
Abstract:
This lecture will give a fractional view of the effects on the environment of the heavy metals Cadmium, Lead and Mercury, and in particular their effects on humans.
What lessons can be learned?
Also to be examined: The role of Integrated Waste Management in the prevention of pollution and the enhancement of environmental sustainability.
Individual OUCS or FUSION members will be able to attend these events if they wish, even if they
are not attending the Revision Weekend itself.

|
Internet café and leisure centre (including fully-equipped gym, sauna, solarium and snooker room).

Costs
|
Single occupancy - £235 per person.

Residential costs include all meals and use of sports facilities (see above).
For students, costs also include tuition.
There is a £5 reduction if you are a member of OUCS or/and FUSION, but only if booked on a single occupancy basis.

Booking a Place
|
To apply, please complete a Booking Form
and send a (non-returnable) deposit of £35 (or the full amount if you prefer; if paying a deposit only,
the balance should be paid no later than 31st August 2008).
Please make cheques payable to the Open University Chemistry Society.
All further correspondence will then be by email unless you specifically request postal mailings, in which case you must include
TWO stamped, addressed A5 envelopes with your initial application.

To take advantage of the Early Bird booking rate of £235, bookings must be received by 31st August.
After this date, the rate may be subject to change.

Note

Each person attending the Science Revision Weekend does so on the understanding that he/she attends at
his/her own risk. The Open University Chemistry and Physics Societies have Public Liability insurance for the
meeting but Personal Liability and Personal Accident cover remain the responsibility of the participant.
Delegates should take out appropriate travel insurance if necessary.
Every effort will be made to provide tutorial provision for the courses listed. However, inclusion of any course is subject to sufficient student
numbers and to the availability of a tutor or tutors. The organisers cannot accept responsibility for the non-arrival of a tutor for any reason and
students should take out any insurance cover they feel necessary to compensate in the event of such an occurrence.
